XDocs CCMS core modules provide a fast to deploy enterprise class CCMS. They comprise of easy-to-master server, desktop and web applications.

Bluestream’s development philosophy is to always use open standards and build components that our clients can configure themselves as and when required. Therefore, creating a ‘zero administration’ system, beyond common operations, such as setting security.

XDocs Micro Architecture

XDocs Repository (Server)

All content is stored in the XDocs Repository. This is the core XDocs folder and file system. The underlying relational database management system stores both XML and binary content. 

CM Admin

The XDocs CM Admin web-based application provides seamless administration of the XDocs CCMS.

System admin can easily set and control user permissions and accounts, configure workflows, set baseline publish dates, and configure projects. As a result, User rights can be scoped to include all descendant folders without a clumsy copy down model. Therefore, greatly reducing the number of permissions you need to maintain.

XDocs supports the import of any binary content. When DITA content is imported, validation and link checks are performed. When unresolved links are encountered, users can search for link targets to resolve links upon import. XDocs can be customized to assign CCMS metadata as part of the import operation.

Export allows files to be exported from the XDocs repository to your local hard drive. The links in these files are fixed to be file-relative links. This means the exported files are truly independent of XDocs. Exported content is DITA with metadata intact.

Metadata may be exported as standard OWL2 XML file. To control file names on export XDocs provides an option to change spaces to underscores. It is also possible to configure further names. In general, XDocs exports using the folder and filename as common in most operating systems. For security and auditing, XDocs provides password protection, encrypted format, and logs user-log in and log out.

CM Portal

CM Portal provides quick access to files for members of staff, enabling them to view the content as either HTML or PDF within a secure web browser environment. It also makes it easy to share content among various departments in the organization such as marketing and sales.

XDocs Explorer

The content creation team use XDocs Explorer for creating, editing, viewing, and managing content in XDocs. Also, rich XML authoring tools like Oxygen XML Author and non-XML tools such as Excel, SnagIt, and Visio can be used.

WEX- browser based review and collaboration

For organizations to truly benefit from structured content, all parties must be able to contribute in a meaningful way. WEX is a web-based module that enables review, casual contributing, and full document authoring of DITA content online.

The SME will receive an email and simply click on a link. Their browser will open showing the content that needs their attention and they can quickly complete the task. Other users and departments can interact in the same way. Therefore, maximising their time whilst increasing the accuracy of the documentation in the minimum time.

The premise behind WEX was simple – no training or installation required. The target audience is anyone who creates content and/or needs to be part of the content development lifecycle.

Tightly integrated with Oxygen Web Editor, WEX can also support any other DITA web-based XML editor. The application is role and workflow capability centric. This allows for greater control while delivering publications within a particular workflow. Also it does not restrict users from contributing meaningful content when great ideas arise. Furthermore, the WEX authoring experience is completely transparent with the interface resembling that of MS Word or a Wiki.


Workflow is a core component of XDocs Micro+ and an optional module for XDocs Micro.

With Workflow you bring the content lifecycle under transparent control. It also enables the involvement of SMEs outside the tech pubs team in the content lifecycle.

Workflows are easy to create, configure and modify. The module is based on the BPMN 2.0 industry standard and the de facto standard Activiti workflow engine.
