What makes a document extensible?

Documents derived from reusable modular content. Customer specific documents delivered to any device/platform. Documents easily localized, always up-to-date and easily found.

The content lifecycle

XDocs CCMS fully supports the creation, management/curation and delivery of extensible documents and content.

Modular Content

DITA has reusable ‘blocks’ or ‘chunks’ of data called ‘Topics’. Afterwards, Topics are assembled using a DITAmap to create a publication. XDocs CCMS fully supports DITA 1.3 which has defined five types of Topic:

  • Concept – more objective, the reason why something might need addressing, definitions, rules, and guidelines.
  • Task – a procedure that describes how to accomplish a task. As a result, it lists a series of steps that users follow to produce an intended outcome.
  • Reference – reference material.
  • Glossary Entry – used for defining a single sense of a given term. This topic type might also have basic terminology information, along with any acronyms or acronym expansions
  • Troubleshooting – describes a condition that the reader may want to correct. Followed by descriptions of cause and suggested remedies.

XDocs’ ability to connect to back-office systems i.e. ERP and PLM applications, ensures relevant up to date material is available to the authors.

Customer Specific Documents delivered to any device or platform

The DITA Open Toolkit publishes DITA content into multiple formats. However, XDocs CCMS extends this capability via Bluestream’s DPP (Dynamic Publishing Platform) and APIs. As a result, you can deliver customer specific content as soon as content is approved to any device/platform.

Easily localized

A major driver for DITA adoption has always been the ability to reduce localization costs. This is achieved because only Topics that have been updated are sent for translation. The eXtensible ability of XDocs CCMS further enhances the localization process. It links directly to your preferred LSPs, managing all aspects of translation projects including quotation submission and approval.

Easily maintained

XDocs CCMS has unrivalled integration with oXygen XML editors. As a result, users switch seamlessly between tools and drive projects from within oXygen or XDocs. However, it is vital that SMEs and others within the organization can also contribute to the content lifecycle.

Bluestream have created WEX a web-based module that enables reviewing and contributing of DITA content in the web. Most important is the premise behind the application’s development – no training or installation needed. For users preferring to use a desktop application XDocs CCMS is also integrated with Simply XML’s Content Mapper application. Content Mapper sits on top of MS Word and so users have a familiar interface.

Easily found

There’s little point in creating content if you cannot find it when you need it. XDocs CCMS has unprecedented metadata management and fully supports the OWL Web Ontology Language. Users ‘subscribed’ to folders/content are notified once content changes .

Accurate and Up to Date

Accurate, up to date information is vital; so ensuring only the latest content is available is a default feature of the DDP. XDocs supports ‘Time Travel’, as a result, you can always show a Topic or Publication as it was on any date or time. You can then run a comparison and see what has changed.
